This bill creates a new criminal offense for the failure to report a lost or stolen firearm within 5 days of becoming aware of the loss or theft. The bill also requires the clerk of the court to provide notice to the Department of Public Safety when someone is convicted of or placed on deferred adjudication for the new offense. Additionally, the bill amends existing laws to allow the Department of Public Safety to consider records of the new offense when reviewing applications for a handgun license and to revoke a handgun license if the holder is convicted of the new offense. The provisions of the bill only apply to firearms lost or stolen on or after the effective date of September 1, 2021.
