This bill, the Vieques Recovery and Redevelopment Act, would provide compensation to certain residents of the island of Vieques, Puerto Rico, for the U.S. military's use of the island for readiness training over several decades. The bill would establish a Special Master to administer the claims process and award individual residents up to $110,000 based on the number of qualifying chronic, life-threatening, or physical diseases they developed. It would also provide the Municipality of Vieques with funding to build and operate a medical facility capable of treating the health issues prevalent on the island due to the military's activities and environmental contamination. Additionally, the bill would provide interim medical services and funding for environmental remediation efforts on the island.
