This Resolution urges the City and County of Honolulu to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Lanikai Bikeway, which opened on July 1, 1972, and to acknowledge the significant contributions of Ted Rodgers and Cynthia Thielen. The bikeway was established after a near-fatal accident involving a student cyclist on Lanikai's narrow roads, which had inadequate space for the growing number of bicycles, many of which belonged to children. Led by concerned parents like Cynthia Thielen and community leaders like Ted Rodgers, the Lanikai Association successfully advocated for a one-way traffic loop and a dedicated bikeway, a pioneering traffic configuration for Oahu, which was approved and built, greatly improving safe bike transportation in Kailua.
