This Concurrent Resolution urges the City and County of Honolulu to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Lanikai Bikeway, which officially opened on July 1, 1972, and to recognize the significant efforts of Ted Rodgers and Cynthia Thielen in its establishment. The bikeway was created in response to a dangerous incident involving a young student cyclist and the lack of safe space for the growing number of bicycles on Lanikai's narrow roads, which at the time had two-way vehicle traffic. Community members, including Cynthia Thielen, surveyed the area and found hundreds of bicycles, mostly used by children, leading to a proposal for a dedicated bikeway and a one-way traffic loop, a novel traffic configuration for Oahu. Ted Rodgers, as president of the Lanikai Association, helped gather community support through a petition, leading to the approval and construction of the bikeway, which has since been expanded and has improved safe cycling in Kailua. The resolution highlights the leadership of Rodgers and Thielen in uniting the community and making tangible contributions to its safety.
