This Resolution urges the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), a state agency responsible for managing Hawaii's natural and cultural resources, to create programs aimed at recovering, preserving, and disseminating the cultural and environmental knowledge associated with limu kala. Limu kala, a type of seaweed, is highlighted as crucial for healthy reef ecosystems, serving as the foundation of the marine food chain and an indicator of the health of an ahupuaa (traditional land division). It is also recognized for its nutritional value, traditional medicinal uses, and significant cultural roles, including its use in hooponopono (a process of reconciliation and forgiveness) and for the protection of ocean voyagers. The resolution notes that much of this valuable knowledge has been lost, contributing to a decline in both limu populations and nearshore fish numbers. By developing these programs, the DLNR is encouraged to help ensure that the benefits of limu-based knowledge are passed on to future generations, supporting both fisheries and the well-being of all Hawaii's residents, especially in light of 2022 being declared the "Year of Limu."
