This bill aims to improve literacy skills in elementary schools by establishing a grant program within the Board of Education. The bill provides for two types of grants: (1) grants for intensive school-wide literacy coaching and professional development, which are limited to a maximum of four years; and (2) grants for K-3 literacy interventions targeting the most at-risk students, which may be ongoing. The amount of the grants will be based on a sliding scale depending on the district's percentage of economically disadvantaged students. Grant recipients will be required to report their results to the department, which will publish the findings online. Renewal of the grants will be contingent on the scientific evidence of the program's efficacy.
