Bill Summary

AN ACT to amend the correction law, in relation to the role of the department of corrections and community supervision in planning and facilitating the discharge or release of incarcerated persons to the community

AI Summary

This bill amends the Correction Law to require the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) to provide comprehensive discharge plans for incarcerated individuals prior to their release or discharge from a correctional facility. The discharge plans must include planning for the individual's mental health, medical care, housing, employment, and any substance use disorder services. DOCCS must coordinate with non-profit providers and the incarcerated individual to ensure the discharge plan is appropriate and well-coordinated. The bill also requires DOCCS to obtain adequate and stable housing for individuals who do not have access to it upon release, and to provide transportation to that housing. Additionally, the bill requires DOCCS to coordinate with local reentry providers to facilitate the individual's successful reintegration into the community.
