Bill Summary

AN ACT to amend the correction law, in relation to the role of the department of corrections and community supervision in planning and facilitating the discharge or release of incarcerated persons to the community

AI Summary

This bill amends the Correction Law to require the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) to provide comprehensive discharge plans for incarcerated persons prior to their release or discharge from a correctional facility. The plans must include planning for the person's mental health, medical care, housing, employment, and substance use disorder services. DOCCS must begin preparing the plan at least 45 days prior to release and provide it to the person and relevant service providers. The bill also requires DOCCS to coordinate with local reentry providers and assist in securing housing that is not temporary shelter, continuing to do so for 30 days after release. The bill also amends existing provisions regarding discharge plans for juvenile and adolescent offenders.
