This bill allows a $500 gross income tax credit for volunteer firefighters in New Jersey. To be eligible, a taxpayer must have been an active member of a volunteer fire company or an active volunteer member of a part-paid fire department in the state for the entirety of the tax year and the prior two tax years. The credit can be applied against the taxpayer's New Jersey gross income tax liability, but it cannot reduce the tax liability to less than zero. The director is authorized to promulgate rules and procedures to implement the credit. The bill takes effect immediately and applies to taxable years beginning on and after January 1 following the date of enactment.
