This bill allows a $500 gross income tax credit for taxpayers who are active members of a volunteer fire company or part-paid fire department in New Jersey for the entirety of the tax year and the prior two tax years. The credit can be applied against the taxpayer's New Jersey gross income tax liability, but it cannot reduce their tax liability to less than zero. The bill also authorizes the director to promulgate rules and procedures to implement the credit, and it will take effect immediately and apply to taxable years beginning on and after January 1 next following the date of enactment.
