This Joint Resolution designates March of each year as "Fibromuscular Dysplasia Awareness Month" in New Jersey to increase public and medical understanding of Fibromuscular Dysplasia (FMD), a disease causing abnormal cell growth in artery walls that can lead to serious complications like narrowing, tears, or aneurysms. FMD, though once considered rare, is now believed to be under-diagnosed, affecting a significant portion of the population, predominantly women, and often involves a lengthy delay in diagnosis and a lack of established treatment protocols. The resolution acknowledges the challenges faced by individuals and families affected by FMD, including isolation and the burden of educating others, and highlights the efforts of organizations like the Fibromuscular Dysplasia Society of America (FMDSA) in raising awareness and funding research, particularly as March aligns with the FMDSA's founding month and their global observance efforts. The Governor is also requested to annually issue a proclamation encouraging appropriate activities and programs to observe this month.
