This bill prohibits the court from requiring a bond or security from the defendant prior to the final disposition of a housing matter, except for appeals. It also clarifies that if the landlord does not prevail on a claim of material lease violation, the tenant can present defenses against the landlord's allegation that rent is owed and be given additional time to pay any rent determined by the court to be due. The bill makes these changes to sections 504B.285 and 504B.335 of the Minnesota Statutes, and the changes are effective August 1, 2022 for actions filed on or after that date.
