This bill, the "Local Government Sanctuary Policy Prohibition Act," prohibits local units of government, such as counties, cities, and townships, from enacting or enforcing any law, ordinance, policy, or rule that limits or prohibits their peace officers or employees from communicating or cooperating with federal officials regarding an individual's immigration status. The bill also requires local governments to bring any existing policies that violate the act into compliance within 60 days. If a local government continues to violate the act, residents can take legal action, and the state attorney general can investigate and bring an enforcement action. If a violation is found, the court must issue an injunction, order the local government to amend or repeal the offending policy, and award damages and attorney's fees. Additionally, the court can impose a civil fine of up to $7,500 on any elected or appointed official who knowingly and willfully enacted or enforced a policy in violation of the act.
