This bill increases the penalty for assaulting a law enforcement officer. Specifically, it amends the law on assault in the third degree to make assaulting a law enforcement officer or assaulting a peace officer with a projectile stun gun a class B felony, rather than a class C felony. The bill also requires a minimum term of 180 days of total confinement for a person convicted of assaulting a law enforcement officer in furtherance of a riot or unlawful assembly. Additionally, the bill adds the crimes of Assault 3 (of a Law Enforcement Officer or Employee) and Assault 3 (of a Peace Officer with a Projectile Stun Gun) to the seriousness level table in the sentencing guidelines.
