This bill increases the minimum amounts of liability insurance coverage required under motor vehicle insurance policies in Hawaii. The bill sets new minimum coverage levels of $XX per person and $XX per accident, which will go into effect on January 1, 2027. Prior to that, the current minimum coverage levels of $20,000 per person and $40,000 per accident will remain in place until December 31, 2026. The insurance commissioner is required to solicit rate filings from insurers to reflect these changes, with the new rates taking effect for new and renewal policies on or after the effective dates. The bill applies to motor vehicle insurance policies entered into, amended, or renewed on or after the effective date of the Act, which is set to June 30, 3000.
