This bill, known as the "Taxpayer Voter Registration Act," allows taxpayers to register to vote upon filing their income tax returns or when changing their address during a real estate transfer. The bill amends the Tax Law, the Real Property Tax Law, and the Vehicle and Traffic Law to create a process where taxpayers can indicate their desire to register to vote by checking a box on their tax forms. The state and local boards of elections will then identify eligible but unregistered individuals and send them a notice with instructions on how to complete the voter registration process. The bill also allows the Department of Taxation and Finance to electronically transmit voter registration information to the State Board of Elections to facilitate the registration of eligible voters.
