This bill, the Fire Information and Reaction Enhancement Act of 2023 (or the FIRE Act of 2023), directs the Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to establish a program to improve wildfire forecasting and detection. The program aims to develop more accurate predictions of wildfire intensification and spread, better forecasting and communication of smoke dispersion, more effective public warnings, and earlier detection of wildfires to contain their growth and mitigate damages. The bill authorizes the Assistant Administrator for the Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research to establish a program to create one or more weather research testbeds to develop improved detection and forecast capabilities for wildfires and their impacts, and it authorizes $15 million in funding for this purpose in fiscal year 2024.
