This bill amends Minnesota Statutes to require a three-fifths majority approval from both the state Senate and House of Representatives to extend a peacetime emergency declaration by the governor beyond the initial 30-day period. Under the current law, the legislature can terminate a peacetime emergency declaration, but this bill would instead require the legislature to actively vote to extend it beyond 30 days. The bill also specifies that the governor must submit a new request to the legislature each time an extension is needed, and the legislature can only grant such extensions with a three-fifths majority vote in both chambers. The changes in this bill would apply to any peacetime emergencies in effect or declared on or after the effective date of the legislation.
