Bill Summary
AN ACT to amend the real property tax law, in relation to establishing a real property tax exemption for veterans who have a one hundred percent service connected disability
AI Summary
This bill establishes a real property tax exemption for the primary residence of veterans who have a 100% service-connected disability. The bill allows counties, cities, towns, villages, or school districts to adopt a local law or resolution to provide this exemption, which would apply to veterans who were honorably discharged, have a qualifying condition, or are discharged LGBT veterans, and are considered permanently and totally disabled, rated 100% disabled by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, or have been rated as individually unemployable. The exemption would fully exempt the veteran's primary residence from taxation and special district charges, assessments, and special ad valorem levies, provided they meet the other requirements of the section. The bill would take effect immediately and apply to assessment rolls prepared on and after January 2, 2024.
