Bill Summary
AN ACT to amend the correction law, in relation to providing notice of voting rights to persons released from local jails
AI Summary
This bill amends the Correction Law to require the chief administrative officer of a local correctional facility to provide written notice on voting rights to every person aged 18 or older who is being discharged or released from the facility's custody. The notice must include information on the importance and mechanics of voting, when the person is or may become eligible to vote, and offer a voter registration form. However, the requirement does not apply to individuals being transferred to a different local correctional facility, a state correctional facility or institution, or a hospital or mental health institution. The bill takes effect 180 days after becoming law.
