This bill amends the Local Government Code to establish new qualifications for serving as a sheriff or being a candidate for sheriff in Texas. It requires sheriffs and sheriff candidates to either hold an active permanent peace officer license or have a minimum of 5 years of experience as a federal special investigator or 10 years of combined active duty or national guard service experience. The bill also repeals a related provision and includes a provision to grandfather in current sheriffs serving terms that began before the effective date of the bill.
