This bill amends the Local Government Code to establish new qualifications for a sheriff or a candidate for sheriff in Texas. The bill requires that a person must have a high school diploma or equivalency, hold an active permanent peace officer license, have at least 5 years of experience as a full-time, paid peace officer or federal special investigator, or 10 years of combined active duty or national guard service experience and be a military veteran, and hold an intermediate, advanced, or master proficiency certificate. The bill also repeals an existing section and provides that the changes do not apply to sheriffs serving terms that began before the effective date of the Act.
