This bill amends the Education Law and the Mental Hygiene Law to require training for teachers, administrators, and instructors in the area of mental health response. The training will include instruction on recognizing the signs and symptoms of mental health crises or illnesses, appropriate responses to such crises, and information on mental health professionals, services, and resources. The Office of Mental Health will advise and assist the Commissioner of Education in developing the training curriculum. The bill also specifies that the training shall not include the diagnosis, treatment, or counseling of students, peers, or community members.
