This bill allows tenants who are victims of certain crimes, such as domestic abuse, sexual abuse, stalking, elder abuse, or other crimes, to terminate their rental agreement without penalty or liability. To do so, the tenant must provide written notice to the landlord and attach specific documentation, such as a protective order or a written report from a law enforcement officer or a licensed health care provider. The bill also prohibits landlords from disclosing the tenant's information or retaliating against the tenant for exercising their rights under this law. Additionally, the bill clarifies that only the leasehold interest of the tenant requesting the termination shall be terminated, and the tenant remains liable for rent for the month in which the termination occurred.
