This bill amends the Insurance Code to define "autism spectrum disorder" and expand health benefit plan coverage for the treatment of autism spectrum disorders. Specifically, it requires health benefit plans to provide coverage for any medically necessary treatment for autism spectrum disorder, including services such as evaluation, assessment, applied behavior analysis, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. The bill also prohibits health benefit plans from restricting coverage based on the setting where the services are provided, except for services that can be reimbursed under the state Medicaid program. The changes in the law apply to health benefit plans delivered, issued for delivery, or renewed on or after January 1, 2024.
