This bill amends the Agricultural Research, Extension, and Education Reform Act of 1998 to direct the Secretary of Agriculture to establish a national biochar research network. The network will have up to 20 research sites or facilities to test various biochar types across different soil types, management conditions, and regions. The research will assess the soil carbon sequestration potential of biochar, understand how to use biochar productively for climate mitigation, crop production, and other benefits, and provide science-based information to farmers, foresters, and other land managers on sustainable biochar production and application. The bill authorizes $50 million per year from 2023 to 2028 to carry out this research network.
