This bill, known as "Summer's Law", aims to enhance school bus safety in the following ways: 1. It requires all school buses to be equipped with sensors on and around the bus doors and sides to detect the presence of people within 12 feet of the bus. The bus driver must be alerted by the sensors and cannot proceed until the area is clear. 2. It mandates that the pre-service school bus driver training program include a minimum of 3 hours of behind-the-wheel and 3 hours of classroom training on the proper pickup and drop-off of students, as well as navigating school bus danger zones. 3. It further requires the in-service school bus driver training program to include a minimum of 2 hours of behind-the-wheel and 2 hours of classroom training on the same topics. The bill also directs the Commissioner of Education and the Registrar to promulgate necessary rules, regulations, or procedures for the administration of this act.
