This bill, known as "Summer's Law", aims to enhance school bus safety in the following ways: 1. It requires school buses to be equipped with sensors on all sides and around the doors to detect the presence of people within 12 feet of the bus. The bus driver cannot proceed until the sensors confirm no one is in the danger zone. 2. It mandates additional training for school bus drivers, including a minimum of 3 hours of behind-the-wheel and 3 hours of classroom training on picking up and dropping off students, as well as 2 hours each of annual in-service training on the same topics. The bill also allows the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority and regional transit authorities to install camera systems on buses and at bus stops to enforce violations, such as parking in bus lanes or at bus stops. The fines collected from these violations will be used to cover the implementation and operation costs of the camera systems, with any remaining funds going to the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's operating account.
