This bill aims to strengthen protections for bank employees and customers. It does this by: 1) Allowing legal action related to Section 40a of Chapter 93 to be brought in the court where either the plaintiff or defendant lives or has a place of business or employment. 2) Increasing the minimum prison sentences for armed robberies and robberies committed within banking institutions or credit unions. This includes a minimum 5-year sentence for a first offense and 15 years for subsequent offenses when a firearm or other deadly weapon is used. 3) Establishing a minimum 30-month prison sentence for unarmed robberies of banks or credit unions. 4) Allowing larceny cases involving forged, altered, or counterfeit checks to be brought in either the court where the uttering occurred or where the victim bank or depository's main office is located. 5) Clarifying that jurisdiction for cases under Section 37 of Chapter 266 can be in the court where the crime was committed or where the main office of the bank or depository is located. The goal of these changes is to better protect banking institution employees and customers from violent crimes and fraud.
