This bill amends the existing laws in Massachusetts related to motor vehicle service contracts. It provides new definitions for key terms like "consumer product", "motor vehicle distributor", and "motor vehicle manufacturer". It also updates the definition of "service contract" to include additional types of coverage such as repair or replacement of tires, paintless dent removal, and windshield chip/crack repair. Importantly, the bill prohibits motor vehicle manufacturers, distributors, or franchisor representatives from requiring or coercing dealers to exclusively sell extended service contracts or maintenance plans offered by the manufacturer. However, the bill allows manufacturers to provide voluntary incentives to encourage such sales. The bill also exempts certain types of warranties and maintenance agreements from the service contract regulations.
