This bill establishes a special legislative commission to reassess school integration within the Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity (METCO) program. The commission will consist of 13 members, including the chairs of the joint committee on education, legislative leaders, the secretary of education, the commissioner of elementary and secondary education, representatives from the Black Educators Alliance of Massachusetts and the NAACP New England Area Conference, as well as former METCO program participants appointed by the governor. The commission will evaluate the historical impact of the METCO program and make recommendations to the state legislature regarding school integration and improvements to the program. The commission is required to convene within 180 days of the bill's effective date and submit its findings and recommendations within one year.
