This bill amends Chapter 111 of the General Laws to establish new floor plan requirements for nursing homes in Massachusetts. It mandates that single-occupancy resident bedrooms must have a minimum floor area of 125 square feet, and multiple-occupancy bedrooms must have at least 90 square feet per bed. The bill also specifies placement and spacing requirements for beds within the bedrooms, including a minimum 4-foot clearance from walls and other obstacles, and a minimum 6-foot unobstructed passageway at the foot of each bed. The new requirements will not apply to bedrooms in nursing homes licensed prior to the effective date of the act, but Section 2 of the bill is repealed on January 1, 2025, at which point the new standards will apply to all nursing homes in the state.
