This bill amends Chapter 54 of the General Laws to address vacancies in certain county positions, including district attorney, register of probate, sheriff, and clerk of the courts. If a vacancy occurs in any of these offices more than 9 months before the end of the term, the governor must call a special election within 120 days to fill the position. In the case of a vacancy in the offices of district attorney, register of probate, or sheriff, the first assistant in that office will assume the duties until a new officer is elected and qualified. For vacancies in the office of clerk of the courts, the justices of the relevant court can appoint someone to hold the position until a new clerk is qualified.
