This bill amends Chapter 22C of the General Laws to allow the Colonel of the State Police to appoint retired uniformed members as special state police officers. These officers may perform police details or any police duties arising from those details, even if unrelated to the detail work. To be eligible, the retired members must have honorable discharge status, be certified by the Police Officer Standards and Training Commission, and meet other criteria set by the Colonel. The special officers are at-will employees subject to appointment and removal by the Colonel, and are not subject to civil service law or entitled to its benefits, but are considered members of the state police for certain purposes.
