This bill requires the Minnesota Commissioner of Commerce to conduct a study evaluating the potential costs, benefits, and impacts of advanced nuclear reactors, including small modular reactors and molten sodium reactors, operating in Minnesota. The study must analyze the effects on air emissions, electricity prices, grid reliability, natural resources, public health, job creation, and local economic development. The bill also directs the Commissioner to identify any state statutes or administrative rules that would require modification to enable the construction and operation of these advanced nuclear reactors. The results of the study must be submitted to the relevant legislative committees by January 31, 2024. Additionally, the bill appropriates $100,000 from the general fund to the Commissioner of Commerce to conduct the study and develop the report.
