This bill, the Vieques Recovery and Redevelopment Act, aims to provide compensation to certain residents of the island of Vieques, Puerto Rico, for the use of the island for military readiness purposes by the U.S. Government over the course of nearly 60 years. The bill establishes a Special Master to consider claims from individual residents and the municipality of Vieques, awarding monetary compensation to eligible individuals with certain chronic, life-threatening, or physical diseases or illnesses. Additionally, the bill directs the Special Master to provide the municipality of Vieques with resources to build and operate a medical facility to address the critical health needs of the island's residents, including transportation and medical costs for off-island treatment. The bill also mandates the appointment of an academic partner to research and address environmental toxins on the island. The compensation is to be paid from the Judgment Fund, with a total limit of $1 billion.
