This bill aims to improve access to diabetes outpatient self-management training services under Medicare. It does this by: 1) Expanding the types of providers who can furnish these services to include qualified non-physician practitioners, in coordination with the physician or practitioner managing the individual's diabetic condition. 2) Increasing the number of covered hours for these services, providing an initial 10 hours that can be used over time, and up to 2 hours per year thereafter. 3) Eliminating the coinsurance requirement for these services, so Medicare will cover 100% of the approved amount. Additionally, the bill requires the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) to test a model for providing virtual diabetes self-management training services, to evaluate whether this can improve health outcomes and reduce Medicare expenditures.
