AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to requiring a period of unstructured physical play for pupils enrolled in kindergarten and grades one through five

This bill amends the Education Law to require every elementary school in New York to schedule a daily recess period of at least 30 minutes or two 15-minute recess periods for students in kindergarten through 5th grade. Recess is defined as a regularly scheduled, supervised, unstructured physical activity period that takes place outdoors, if reasonable. This recess time must be separate from the scheduled lunch period or physical education class. The bill will take effect 90 days after becoming law and apply to school years starting on or after the following July 1st.
