This bill, effective immediately, aims to reduce waste by prohibiting large online retailers and major retailers in New Jersey from using shipping boxes that are more than twice the volume of the product being shipped, with an exception for minimum size requirements set by postal or private shipping companies. A "large online retailer" is defined as a business selling goods online with annual gross sales of at least one million dollars in or into the state, and a "major retailer" is a retail establishment with at least 75,000 square feet and 50 or more employees. Violators will face civil penalties ranging from $250 to $500 per offense, with each day of a continuing violation counting as a separate offense, and enforcement can be pursued by various government entities. Importantly, this restriction does not apply to "consumer electronics products," which are defined as any electronic device used in the home or business that includes circuitry, such as computers, printers, televisions, and telecommunications devices.
