This joint resolution designates September of each year as "Chiari Malformation-Syringomyelia Awareness Month" in New Jersey to increase public understanding of Chiari Malformation (CM) and Syringomyelia (SM). CM is a structural defect where part of the brain, the cerebellum, is located below the normal position in the skull, potentially blocking the flow of cerebrospinal fluid, which is the liquid that cushions the brain and spinal cord. This blockage can lead to Syringomyelia, a disorder where a cyst or cavity forms within the spinal cord, potentially causing damage. The resolution highlights that CM is estimated to affect about one in 2,000 people, with symptoms often appearing in adolescence or early adulthood and including pain, dizziness, weakness, and coordination problems, and it requests the Governor to issue an annual proclamation encouraging citizens and officials to observe this month with appropriate awareness activities and programs.
