This joint resolution designates September as "Chiari Malformation-Syringomyelia Awareness Month" in New Jersey to raise public understanding of these complex neurological conditions. Chiari Malformation (CM) is a structural brain defect where part of the cerebellum is located below the skull's normal opening, potentially causing pressure on the brain and disrupting cerebrospinal fluid flow. Syringomyelia (SM) is a related disorder involving a fluid-filled cyst in the spinal cord that can expand over time. The resolution highlights that approximately one in 1,200 people have CM, with an average diagnosis age of 24, and notes that while many patients experience no symptoms, others may suffer from severe head and neck pain, dizziness, muscle weakness, and impaired motor skills. By establishing this awareness month, the resolution aims to increase understanding among medical professionals, employers, and the general public about the condition, its challenges, and the potential need for accommodations, with the ultimate goal of promoting better support and recognition for those affected by CM and SM.
