This bill establishes a Nuclear Power Advisory Commission within the Department of Environmental Protection to conduct a comprehensive study on the role of nuclear energy in New Jersey's future. The commission will consist of nine members, including ex officio representatives from the Department of Environmental Protection, Board of Public Utilities, and New Jersey Utilities Association, as well as six gubernatorial appointees representing nuclear power plants, academic experts, environmental organizations, the business community, and labor organizations. Within 18 months of the bill's enactment, the commission must submit a detailed report to the Governor and Legislature with recommendations about nuclear energy's role in the state's energy portfolio. The commission will be supported by staff from the Department of Environmental Protection and can seek assistance from other state agencies. The bill specifies that the commission will expire 30 days after submitting its required report, ensuring a focused and time-limited investigation of nuclear energy's potential in New Jersey.
