This bill establishes special license plates for honorably discharged veterans in New Jersey. To be eligible, an applicant must be classified as a veteran according to state law, which can be proven with their DD-214 form (a Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty), and must have received an honorable discharge. The Chief Administrator of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission will issue these distinctive plates, designed by the Adjutant General of the Department of Military and Veterans' Affairs in consultation with the chief administrator. The plates will include the word "Veteran" and indicate the branch of military service. There will be an additional $15 fee for these special plates, which will cover the production and issuance costs. Surviving spouses of deceased veterans who are eligible to drive may also retain these special plates. The Motor Vehicle Commission will inform drivers about these new plates through registration renewal notices and by posting information in its facilities. The chief administrator will also create rules for the plates' issuance and use, and the law will take effect 180 days after it is enacted.
