This bill expands the authority of pharmacists, pharmacy interns, externs, and technicians to administer drugs and vaccines. Under the new provisions, these healthcare professionals can administer drugs to patients 18 and older under specific conditions, such as following a prescription, implementing immunization programs under a standing order, or participating in governmental agency sponsored programs. The bill specifically allows appropriately trained pharmacy personnel to administer influenza and COVID-19 vaccines to patients five years and older, with parental or guardian permission required for patients under 18. Pharmacy interns, externs, and technicians can administer immunizations under the direct supervision of a licensed, pre-approved pharmacist. All vaccine doses must be reported to the New Jersey Immunization Information System for patient record-keeping. The bill requires that these healthcare workers receive appropriate education and training as determined by the New Jersey State Board of Pharmacy and the State Board of Medical Examiners. The regulatory boards are authorized to adopt necessary regulations, which can be implemented immediately and will be in effect for up to 18 months. The legislation aims to increase vaccine accessibility and expand the role of pharmacy personnel in providing immunization services.
