This resolution condemns the People's Republic of China's treatment of the Uyghur ethnic group, a predominantly Muslim population of approximately 12 million people living in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of western China. The resolution highlights that since 2017, China has required religions to orient away from traditional values and towards state subservience, and has responded to Uyghurs' continued religious faithfulness with severe repression, including the internment of over one million Uyghurs in concentration camps. Drawing on New Jersey's constitutional principles of religious freedom and the state's commitment to ethnic and religious diversity, the resolution formally condemns China's actions against the Uyghurs. It also mandates that the Clerk of the General Assembly transmit copies of the resolution to key diplomatic representatives, including the U.S. Secretary of State, the Chinese Ambassador to the United States, and China's UN Permanent Representative, thereby formally communicating New Jersey's official stance on this human rights issue.
