This Senate resolution condemns the People's Republic of China's treatment of the Uyghur ethnic group, a predominantly Muslim minority of approximately 12 million people living in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of western China. The resolution highlights that despite being hardworking and peaceful people known for cultivating about one-fifth of the world's cotton, the Uyghurs have faced severe religious persecution since 2017, when China mandated that all religions orient towards state subservience. In response to Uyghurs maintaining their traditional Islamic faith, the Chinese government has reportedly engaged in increasingly repressive actions, including the internment of over one million Uyghurs in concentration camps. Drawing on New Jersey's constitutional principles of religious freedom and commitment to ethnic and religious diversity, the resolution formally condemns China's treatment of the Uyghur people and directs the Secretary of the Senate to transmit copies of the resolution to key diplomatic representatives, including the U.S. Secretary of State and Chinese ambassadors.
