This bill requires that all individual and group health insurance policies in Mississippi provide coverage for the treatment of obesity and morbid obesity, including bariatric, gastric bypass, and lap band surgeries, as well as obesity screening examinations and tests, when a physician has determined that the individual's body mass index is 30% or more above their ideal body weight and the treatment is medically necessary. The bill sets requirements for deductibles, coinsurance, and reimbursement rates for these covered services, and allows for referrals to non-participating providers if the plan does not have an appropriate in-network provider available. The bill will take effect on July 1, 2024.
