This bill mandates that New Jersey school districts incorporate instruction on the history and contributions of Latinos and Hispanics into their curriculum for students from kindergarten through 12th grade, as part of the state's existing New Jersey Student Learning Standards in Social Studies. The instruction must be accurate, culturally relevant, community-based, contemporary, and age-appropriate. To assist schools, the Commissioner of Education, working with the Commission on Latino and Hispanic Heritage, will provide sample learning activities and resources. The State Board of Education will develop specific learning standards for Latino and Hispanic history, which will be updated concurrently with any revisions to the broader New Jersey Student Learning Standards. This requirement will take effect immediately and apply to the first full school year after the bill is enacted.
