This bill requires New Jersey school districts to provide instruction on the history and contributions of Latino and Hispanic Americans as part of implementing the New Jersey Student Learning Standards in Social Studies. Specifically, the State Board of Education must adopt learning standards focused on Latino and Hispanic history, and school districts must include this instruction for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. The instruction must be historically accurate, culturally relevant, community-based, contemporary, and developmentally appropriate. The Commissioner of Education, in collaboration with the Commission on Latino and Hispanic Heritage, will provide school districts with sample learning activities and resources to support this new requirement. The bill will take effect immediately and will first apply to the first full school year after its enactment, with standards being updated concurrently with regular updates to the New Jersey Student Learning Standards.
