This bill authorizes the Governor to include a $1 million annual appropriation in the state budget to the Department of Planning, which will be granted to the Maryland Humanities Council to support the "Marilyn Hatza Memorial Strengthening the Humanities Investment in Nonprofits for Equity (SHINE) Grantmaking Initiative." The Maryland Humanities Council will use these funds to provide general operating grants to small and mid-size nonprofit organizations focused on humanities, arts, culture, and education, with consideration for geographic and racial diversity in the grantee selection process. The bill also requires the Maryland Humanities Council to submit an annual report detailing the grant recipients, funding amounts, and how the funds were used to create or preserve jobs, support general operations, and sustain humanities programs.
